History of the City

Historians believe Machu Picchu was built at the height of the Inca Empire, which dominated western South America in the 15th and 16th centuries. It was abandoned an estimated 100 years after its construction, probably around the time the Spanish began their conquest of the mighty pre-Columbian civilization in the 1530s. There is no evidence that the conquistadors ever attacked or even reached the mountaintop citadel, however; for this reason, some have suggested that the residents’ desertion occurred because of a smallpox epidemic.

There are  different tickets to visit Machupicchu:

• Machupicchu itself 5000 people per day
• Machupicchu itself  and Waynapicchu mountain (45 min climb) 200 people per day
• Machupicchu itself  and Machupicchu Montaña (2 hrs climb) 200 people  per day

There are different circuits which are call:

Ruta 1,and Ruta 2: they go to the upper part of Machupicchu Citadel,

Ruta 3 and Ruta 4 go trought the middle part of the Citadel.

All tickets or tours are limited, and worth it, but  Machupicchu Montaña and Waynapicchu mountain are extra climbs.

Machupicchu itself  is open from 06:00 to 17:00 hrs. The entrance tickets have time to visit, (every hour); but  Waynapicchu  and Machupicchu Montaña are open at 07:00 and 10:00. only two times a day.

When you book Machupicchu tour  you have to ask the time  to visit, it has to be related with the train time departure, because if we lose the visit time of Machupicchu or date we can’t change it.  To visit any option of the tours we have to show our original passport and the entrance fee. When we are in Machupicchu itself the tour is  one way we can´t go back to the beginning, the approximately tour takes 2 or 3 hours.

• If you book  Machupicchu citadel and  Waynapicchu mountain option,  you will need 2 hours extra.
• If you book Machupicchu citadel and Machupicchu montaña option, you will need 4 extra hours.

ONE DAY TOUR:

We drive from your Hotel to Ollantaytambo´s train station one hour forty five minutes from Cusco, we go  by train to Aguas Calientes Town for one hour forty five  minutes, then we take a bus up to Machupicchu archaeological site; at the entrance we show our tickets and passport to visit the citadel (the entrance  to Machupicchu and other tours options have a schedule according to the authorities) , we will do the tour with our professional tour guide around the most important and sacred places of the citadel, two and half hours the tour. All the time you will be assisted by a tour guide. In the afternoon we  have lunch, (by Machupicchu or in the town), then we will have time to walk around Aguas Calientes Town, later we take our train back to Ollantaytambo, and  drive by car  to your Hotel.

TWO DAYS TOUR:

FIRST DAY:

Morning Departure: We start from your hotel and go to Ollantaytambo train station on the way we stop at Ollantaytambo archeological site we visit and do the tour for one and a half hours, then  we take the train to Aguas Calientes where we will have lunch, in the afternoon we visit Machupicchu, we will walk trought the check point showing our tickets and passport and we climb to the upper part of the citadel (Ruta 1 and/or Ruta 2), then we do the tour,  and in the evevning you spend the night in a hotel of your preference.

SECOND DAY:

We start from our hotel in Aguas Calientes in the morning according to your entrance tickets  time, we walk to the bus station to go up to Machu Picchu archeological site (25 min). We arrive to the entrance where we show again our tickets and original passport, then we walk to the middle part of Machupicchu (Ruta 3, and/or Ruta 4) to have a different view of Machupicchu, then we do  the tour of different places, if you want we can  climb one of the mountains of your preference, (Waynapicchu / Machupicchu Montaña), the tour and the climb of any mountain you will be assist by our professional guide. In the afternoon we leave Machupicchu and we take the bus down to the town and have lunch there, later we take our train back to Ollantaytambo train station,  then drive to Cusco.
